Dee's building connections and community through diversity

Being aware of the different cultures within her communityand finding genuine ways for people to connect, is at the heart of what Dee does in her role, every day.

My favourite thing about working at APM is that I get to work with a diverse range of people — people from all backgrounds, people from all cultures.

Dee is the First Nations Engagement Lead at APM.

Born and raised in WA, Dee is grateful for the encouragement from her mum, to become exposed to her First Nation’s culture, as a way of helping her discover a sense of identity.

My mum always pushed for us to learn more about culture, exposing us to First Nations resources and tools in the local communities where we grew up — so we could find a sense of identity.

And that sense of identity goes a long way in allowing Dee to engage with local groups of all backgrounds.

My Indigenous identity helps me connect with community in multiple ways. I feel as though it's easier to engage. It's easier to speak to them on a level in which we can discuss mutual benefits.

Dee strongly believes that shared human connection, no matter where people come from, is the basis of understanding and support.

You need to have an understanding of what the community is looking for in order to give thewhat they need.

And of course, so is having good understanding of what’s happening on a local level.

Local knowledge is important to my role because you need to be in touch and have your finger on the pulse in the community.

Dee’s also passionate about understanding the cultural differences that impact the community, to offer more relevant and personal support.

“Cultural awareness at APM is important because we work closely with community, and we are providing support and assistance on a level that hasn't been seen before.

And it all comes back to that sense of human connection, which Dee believes is essential.

Working together, being united, and that sense of community, is something that everyone is looking for. Sometimes they don't know how to find it, but they can sure find it at APM.
