Jasvir and WCG

Jasvir has lived a remarkable life

Jasvir was only eight months old when he was hit on the head, and after that, he never walked.

His friends carried him to school.

He walked on his hands, getting blisters in the hot Indian summer sun.

His friends used to talk to him at his family’s shop.

But when he came to Canada, he had no one to talk to.

Then, when he met his wife-to-be, his life changed for the better.

Jasvir remembers, “She asked me. So, if we are going to get married, you have to work. We got married in 2013. Then I started looking for work. So, they suggested me to go meet at The Bennett Edge.”

The Bennett Edge provides specialist services for Employment Ontario - a training and development program by WCG Services, who are part of APM Group in Canada.

Mike Bennett owns The Bennett Edge, in Canada’s Peel region, working primarily with people with disabilities and supporting them in finding and maintaining meaningful employment.

To begin with, Mike realised that Jasvir needed help with his confidence.

“So it was a lot of working with Jasvir to say, Dude, you got this, you can do this, look at you. You’re making me laugh. You’re an incredible communicator. And it was over time that we were able to actually pull those things out.”

Mike provided support in many areas, including helping to create Jasvir’s resume, so he could begin applying for jobs.

Within two months, he was successful.

Jasvir says Mike went above and beyond, “He personally took me in his car to Home Depot for my interview. They hired me for 20 hours a week. That was not enough for me. Then I contact Bennett Edge again, that I need a full-time job if you can help me find that.”

One of the first places Mike thought of was working at the airport.

He discussed it with Jasvir, who loved the idea.

The employer was so impressed with Jasvir’s application and interview that he was hired on the spot.

Jasvir now works at the Pearson Airport on the departure level, directing passengers to the correct gates and baggage carousels.

“I see thousands of passengers every day. I talk to them, throw a joke at them. So, I feel like quite comfortable talking to people.”

Finding meaningful employment for Jasvir has been just as meaningful for Mike, “When I retire, and I have to think about some of the successes, one of the ones that will stand out is Jasvir, because I’ve just watched such an incredible man grow.”
