Goolwa Caravan Centre’s diversity journey pays off

Goolwa Caravan Centre isn't just about selling caravans - it's a place where everyone’s individual journey is valued.

By welcoming employees with unique abilities into its fold, the company has discovered the secret ingredient to a flourishing business — a diverse and dedicated team, with people like Gary leading the charge.

Gary, who handles sales and customer interactions, was not just another hire. He brought with him an impressive background in caravan maintenance and an infectious positively.

“Gary's a firecracker. He doesn't stop,” says Amos, Gary’s employer, who worked with APM Employment Services to find his ideal employee.

“We've got four guys in the shed now, all from APM, and they've all been real successful,” he adds.

The Goolwa team's experience aligns with well-documented research indicating the myriad advantages of a diverse workforce.

According to a report by the Australian Government's Department of Social Services, businesses that include people with disability can see a range of benefits including improvements in productivity and employee morale, as well as a customer base that feels more reflected and respected.

The benefits don't stop at intangible morale boosts either.

By accommodating employees with ergonomic equipment and personalised support systems, they've seen an upturn in overall staff wellbeing and efficiency.

“We've had lifts installed for individuals with bad backs, which help them and, in turn, bolster our productivity,” Amos said, underlining the positive ripple effect that supportive workplace adjustments can create.

This commitment to a supportive and diverse workplace culture has not gone unnoticed by the employees. Gary's experience of acceptance and camaraderie is replicated in the testimonies of his colleagues, confirming the centre's success in creating a bonded and resilient team.

“To go in there and be accepted was fantastic,” says Gary.

“The blokes all accepted me really, really well and to hit the perfect job like that, but just suited my skill set was just was quite unbelievable.”

Amos credits the support from APM in hiring people like Gary and growing a diverse and accommodating workplace.

“I'm very time poor, so APM take care of whatever we need to happen. They look after guys if they got uniform issues or personal issues that they try and help them out in that way as well.”
